CNN: Network of Democrat Viewers

CNN has done what it can to market itself as the middle-of-the-road cable network; not “rightwing” like Fox News, not “leftwing” like MSNBC. No Bias, No Bull and all that.

The marketing mantra has resulted in … well, it’s not entirely clear what. The cable pioneer’s ratings have plunged. Today it actually rates third in many time slots.

A new survey by The Pew Research Center for the People and the Press contains many interesting nuggets. But the most interesting is that despite the down-the-middle marketing initiative, CNN is actually the favorite network of Democrats. By a lot.

According to the study, 75% of Democrats have a favorable view of CNN. That’s the highest among the three cable news outlets. The network is viewed favorably by only 44% of Republicans. By comparison, only 60% of Democrats have a favorable view of MSNBC.

The study also states, “Democrats are more than twice as likely than Republicans to cite CNN (29% vs. 13%).”

What does it all mean?  Well, it’s difficult to say exactly. But one thing is for sure.  If CNN believes its own marketing then it is proceeding down a self-delusional path, one that may accelerate its ratings woes.  If they are selling a product, they need to brand themselves more accurately and target their audience more deliberately.

I’m surprised CNN does so well with Republicans.  Anything with a taint of real balance seems to be viewed with disdain by the right wing.  They seem to like their reality totally sanitized.

OTOH, I’m not surprised with MSNBC’s performance, since any perceived left-wing bias is abhorrent to the center.  The news spectrum is so full of right-wing bias these days that the “center” of 30 years ago would be seen as leftish nowadays.

CNN is balanced.  MSNBC is only “perceived” to be left wing.  Chris Matthews has bi-partisan leg tingles.

Tony Soprano is a misunderstood scamp who wouldn’t hurt a fly.  Hannibal Lecter is just a mild-mannered student of anatomy.  And kindly Red Sox fans send baskets of flowers to dress up Yankee Stadium.

I’ll give CNN a little credit, seeing as how they were one of the few besides Fox who actually reported on Van Jones, ACORN, etc… but that’s about as far as I’ll go.  They’re not as liberal as MSNBC, so I guess that makes them centrist, or “moderate” in the liberal opinion of the word.

Redbeard, I know you and I agree on what liberals consider “center”.  It’s the same theory they implement with “bi-partisan”...  which means meet us more than halfway.

The rest of the “news” agencies however can suck on this.
